The doomsday clock – a theoretical device that purports to tell us how close we are to a nuclear apocalypse – has frozen at five minutes to midnight, unchanged from last year. Physicists tell the head of the UN there is little reason to move it back.
The visual metaphor has held its appeal for more than 60 years now. The hands of time are moved in accordance with the analyses of a special board of scientists who ponder international threats, especially those having to do with nuclear armaments.
While a team of physicists writing to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted some positive developments in 2013 – including successful talks on Iran’s nuclear program, and the fact that overall there has been a reduction in nuclear armaments worldwide – they decided there was still little hope for jubilation:
"As always, new technologies hold the promise of doing great good, supplying new sources of clean energy, curing disease, and otherwise enhancing our lives. From experience, however, we also know that new technologies can be used to diminish humanity and destroy societies," wrote the scientists on the board.
"We can manage our technology, or become victims of it. The choice is ours, and the Clock is ticking," they added.
The clock was first launched in 1947 by the editors of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists. The wife of one of the researchers on the team, Martyl Langsdorf, had offered her artistic rendition of the object.
Back in 1947, the clock had showed seven minutes to midnight. In 1953, things looked the most critical in the clock’s entire history to date: they showed two minutes to midnight, following the US and Russian nitrogen bomb tests, spaced only nine months apart.
Meanwhile, 1991 was in the minds of the scientists the safest year: the Cold War had ended, and there was thankfully an agreement between the world’s then-superpowers, the US and the USSR, on reducing strategic nuclear arsenals.

All in all, the clock’s hand changed its position 20 times. In 2012 it moved to five minutes to midnight, which symbolizes hypothetical nuclear annihilation.
The scientists believe that Russia and the United States must continue to make progress on eradicating their nuclear arsenals and further negotiate.
Specifically, once there [at the table], “they should take the courageous steps needed to further shrink their nuclear arsenals, to scrap their deployment of destabilizing missile defenses, and to reduce the alert levels of their nuclear weapons.”
They were also not too happy about China, India and Pakistan making strides in the opposite direction with their military developments – including the stockpiling of fissile materials.
The group thought that the Fukushima catastrophe would wake the world up to the necessities of moving away from nuclear energy, but complained that only Germany and Switzerland really made huge strides, while countries like the United Kingdom are discussing the construction of new nuclear facilities yet.
The group is also unhappy with the progress the UN has made in the field of climate sustainability and negotiations on policies in that area. The threat of global warming, they say, is still real. After all, since 2007, they claim the clock reflects not only nuclear catastrophe, but also climate change.
The physicists also wrote that, while there have been leaps in the development and spread of new technologies, the world is not growing fast enough to catch up to them and control them. Amongst them are breakthroughs in the fields of biology and cybernetic technologies – such as drones.
They believe that new bodies must be set up for dealing with all emerging technologies.
“The revolution in information technology is accelerating, and the consequences of such broad and fast-paced technological change cannot be foreseen. Some of the results of this revolution, such as military robotics and cyber warfare, will challenge international law and the norms of war, much as nuclear weapons do. These scientific advances require serious attention and policy action—before our newest technologies fuel another senseless and dangerous arms race.”

Parents call police for help, cops show up and kill their 18-year-old son

Parents call police for help, cops show up and kill their 18-year-old son

Two North Carolina parents are in shock after local police shot and killed their 18-year-old son in their own home, while they watched helplessly.
The family called police because they were worried about their son, Keith Vidal, who is schizophrenic and suffers from depression, according to local news. Vidal, armed with a small screwdriver, was apparently having a psychotic episode. Mark Wilsey, Vidal’s father, called the authorities to help deal with the situation.
An officer from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and another from the Boiling Spring Lakes police department showed up to the house soon after. Eventually, a third officer from the Southport police department entered the home as well, and ordered the use of tasers to subdue Vidal. According to Wilsey, Vidal was pinned on the ground by two of the officers when a third said, “we don’t have time for this,” and shot Vidal, killing him.
Vidal had just turned 18, and weighed a mere 90 pounds. He couldn’t have hurt anyone with the screwdriver, and had no history of violence according to family and friends.
“There was no reason to shoot this kid,” said Wilsey in a statement. “They killed my son in cold blood. We called for help and they killed my son.” (RELATED: TheDC’s Dirty Dozen: 12 SHOCKING police abuse stories of 2013)

After her son was killed, Vidal’s mother suffered a mental breakdown and was treated by medical staff.
The New Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office told The Daily Caller that no statement has been released yet, but the district attorney and state investigators are looking into the shooting.
A similar thing happened to a Georgia family in October. (RELATED: Family calls 911 for medical help, cops show up and kill son)

Why Are Millions Of Fish Suddenly Dying In Mass Death Events All Over The Planet?
Prev1 of 5Next
Millions upon millions of fish are suddenly dying in mass death events all over the world, and nobody seems to know why it is happening.  In many of the news reports that are linked to below, locals are quoted as saying that they have never seen anything like this before.  So is there a connection between all of the fish deaths that are now occurring all over the planet?
If there is a connection, is there anything that we can do to stop the fish die-off?  Sadly, because the big mainstream news networks in the United States have been virtually silent about this phenomenon, most Americans have absolutely no idea that it is happening.  Millions of fish are dying in mass death events every single month and most of the public is totally clueless.
Please share the list posted below with as many people as you can.  This list was originally started by Frank DiMora, but I have edited it and expanded it.  If there were just three or four items on this list, you could dismiss these news stories as coincidences, but taken together this list really is quite startling…

Prince Charles tells business leaders that nature's 'bank' is being depleted

Prince of Wales tells executives that they are squandering their grandchildren's inheritance in favour of economic growth

The Prince of Wales has warned that the world is fast consuming its grandchildren's inheritance in the pursuit of short-term "untenable economic growth".
Charles said the "bank" of the natural world was being depleted and was in the red, as he launched a network that aims to put environmental and social issues at the heart of corporate decisions.
In a speech to senior business executives, he criticised those who ignored the evidence of climate change, saying the situation was like the moment in history when Sir Winston Churchill's warnings about global conflict - ahead of the Second World War - went unheeded.
The new Chief Financial Officer Leadership Network has been founded by Charles and set up by the Accounting for Sustainability (A4S) Project
The aim of the network is to focus on how Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) can integrate environmental and social issues into financial decisions.
Speaking at an A4S forum held at St James's Palace, the Prince said: "In stark financial terms, all the evidence demonstrates a simple fact - we are failing to run the global bank, that we call our planet, in a competent manner.
"We no longer just take a dividend each year, instead, for some time, we've been digging into out capital reserve."
He added: "The ultimate bank on which we all depend, the bank of natural capital, is in the red.
"The debt is getting ever bigger and that is reducing nature's resilience and considerably impeding her ability to restock - it leaves us dangerously exposed.
"The bottom line of all this is surely plainly obvious - we are to a large extent consuming our children and grandchildren's inheritance in order to fuel today's short-term untenable economic growth."
He told his audience of leading finance officers from companies like GlaxoSmithKline, Burberry and Network Rail: "Am I alone then in wondering how it is that in a society based entirely on an evidence-based approach to everything we do, and despite the overwhelming scientific evidence of climate change... such evidence is disregarded and ignored."
He added that a "predominant ideology" was "arrogantly" dismissing this evidence and the situation brought to mind Churchill's warnings in the run up to the catastrophe of the Second World War.
Those already signed up to the new network include Anglian Water, Bupa, Burberry Group, British Land, The Crown Estate, Danone, Royal DSM, Marks & Spencer, National Grid, Sainsbury's, SSE, South West Water, Unilever, United Utilities, Walmart EMEA and Yorkshire Water.
Showing leadership on how companies should respond to challenges including climate change, a rising and ageing global population, rapid urbanisation and increased consumption are some of the issues to be tackled by the network.
It will also spread the message to investors and stakeholders so they can understand how there is a potential commercial gain to be made from sustainable business models.
The A4S CFO Leadership Network co-chairmen John Rogers (CFO, Sainsbury's) and Pierre-Andre Terisse (CFO, Danone) and network member Rolf-Dieter Schwalb (CFO, Royal DSM) also attended the forum.
Mr Rogers praised Charles for recognising "the vital importance of bringing sustainability issues" into corporate governance and accounting.
Arguing that this approach needed to become "natural" to company finance teams, he said: "I'm pleased to be co-chairing this significant new initiative and urge my counterparts in business and public organisations to contribute their skills and experience to the A4S CFO Leadership Network."
The network is to be extended globally during 2014.
